Virginia

career day talk, year two

I was invited to speak at Robious Middle School in Virginia again for their Career Day this week:

Career Day talk

Robious Middle School

(I’m sandwiched between a funny sales guy, a high-energy teacher, and a sweet and sassy fire marshall. Not bad company for a Wednesday lunch:) We were just a few of the 30+ speakers on hand.)

The thought that kids who are between 12-14 years old might think I am the slightest bit cool is pretty great. (Let’s just assume they did.) It was a blast and honor to be at this school. Funny though, I found that once again, more adults (teachers and administrators) thought I was cool, than the kids did. I love having conversations with parents or teachers who say “I want to do what you did/are doing!” or “Um…do you mind if my daughter/son calls or writes to you?”

Um- yes please! Call me! Write me! Send a bird!

One particular teacher this week (who happened to be a writing teacher) was a welcomed and helpful force in my room of 25 antsy kids as I was on my soapbox. She occasionally piped in with something like; “Listen to that kids? Passion! That’s what makes you great at a career! That’s what we talk about all the time.” She was fantastic, she got it, and I am thrilled to know there are still teachers like her out there. After my talk was done, she came up to me and asked if I minded if her 25 year old daughter contacted me. Of course! I’ve heard time and time again from parents of 20-somethings, that they have these super smart and driven young adult children who “just don’t know what they want to do.”

Rest assured supportive, yet concerned parents; This “no idea what to do” is a positive big deal: Your 20-something has officially stepped out of the American Drone Zone. (Wahoo!) They’ve jumped off the gerbil wheel that’s labeled “This is what you do now.” They’ve taken a plunge into a pool that’s full of maybe a tad bit scared but actually really excited fellow troops, who are proclaiming; I don’t know exactly where I want to go/what I want to quite yet, but I know one thing for sure and the automated have-to life is not for me!

Your kid will be fine. In fact- better than fine. They can think for themselves, they value their happiness, and they don’t want to be like everyone else. That is totally awesome. They will figure it out and be better in the long run for jumping ship into their own ocean.

Some advice I gave the middle schoolers. Can be applied to all humans:

1.) Concentrate on what you’re good at, not what you suck at: Challenge yourself to try things that are hard for you, but if you genuinely don’t like something, if you pretty much still stink at it even though you’ve tried and tried- walk away and focus on your greatness. You will become a master and the opportunities are endless. In short: Stay in your lane.

2.) Stay top of mind; Keep showing up. Want a job at that place that isn’t hiring? Want to learn from that person or company you think is the bomb? Tell the company why you’d be the best ever at that job. Tell the person you admire why you think they are awesome and why they inspire you. Send a resume, send a video, send a chicken, send flowers, send a note, send yourself showing up at the door waving and smiling. I promise as soon as there is the need for a hire or room for an intern- they will think of you first. In short: “They” will find it impossible not to love you and want you around.

3.) Never be afraid to ask: Those who ask shall receive. I was mortified as a kid when my grandmother shoo’d me up to various counters asking if the store would still honor an expired coupon, or if they offered any discounts. Embarrassment central when you’re 8 or 10 years old, but you know what? – nearly every single time, I was met with a “Sure! We can do X,Y,Z” response. Just speak up; when you stand up you stand out. In short: You get what you ask for. Seriously.

Here’s to encouraging ship jumpers! I can’t wait to keep doing it again, and often

What advice do you give?

365 days of blue lollipop road; day 22

1.22.14

*Technical difficulties yesterday. (Boo!) Day 22’s post is coming in far after midnight, so I’m doubling up today. (There’s a very good chance no one out there even pays attention to the time/date stamp on these posts, but I do, so I’m calling myself out here:)

Day 22 of BLR 365 is a submission from a chef friend in Virginia:

…before she started chopping for dinner. Mmm! Comfort food on cold days = yummy!

Have you made your BLR yet?

Send me your submissions: Diane(@)bluelollipoproad.com so I can share here!

365 days of blue lollipop road; day 18

1.18.14

From the Megs Miles Facebook Page sent to me by a good friend a couple days ago:

Meg Cross Menzies was tragically killed by a drunk driver while out for her morning run on January 13, 2014. As an avid runner, member of the Richmond Road Runners Club, and Boston marathoner, she was a member of the running family nationwide. In her honor, our hope is to raise awareness of drunk driving, texting and driving, and overall safety of runners and cyclists everywhere.

This Saturday, January 18, 2014, no matter what your distance, no matter where you live, run for Meg. Take in the fresh air, be aware of your surroundings, keep your headphones on low, feel the heaviness in your lungs, the soreness in your legs, and be grateful for it–for all of it. The sweat, the pain, the wind, the cold…everything. Be grateful for that moment.

I’m a runner and I lived in Richmond for many years, surrounded by amazing friends and a wonderful community. When I heard this news I of course wanted to participate in honor of Meg. What a tragic story and another reason to be thankful for the time we have the people we love. Today I have “made” my BLR my run for Meg, in honor of a woman I didn’t know personally, but a fellow runner, and someone who sounds like an amazing person who was very much loved by all she crossed paths with.

Pre-run:

My big smile might look a little too happy, before a bit of a somber run- but all I was thinking when giving the thumbs up, was about celebrating time with those who are so special to each of us. Blue Lollipop Road is in honor of people who were taken from me far too young and far too soon, like Meg- but the spirit of those who we have the fortune to spend time with that are as special as my friends were, and it sounds like Meg was, will truly live on forever.

Here’s to love and support for Meg’s family far away, and to knowing that to live in our hearts, is never to die.

This is what my road looks like today. What’s happening on yours?

365 days of blue lollipop road; day 7

1.7.14

The BLR for today is food again! What can I say, this girl likes to eat:

My go to favorite appetizer (that I often make a meal out of) is granny smith apples, Cabot Vermont white cheddar, (specifically the Hunters Sharp in the plaid wrapper) and baguette crostini with olive oil, black pepper and sea salt. This with a glass of pinot grigio = YUM. Somehow it tastes even better while watching awards shows and other things like The Bachelor/Bachelorette with a bunch of girlfriends. (Don’t judge, even us “non-TV watchers” like a little fashion, drama, and trash entertainment on occasion!) A little over a year ago, I was introduced to some specialty olive oils and balsamic vinegars from a place called Olio. This is where my apple and cheese life changed forever. I added a drizzle of Olio’s chipotle olive oil & cranberry balsamic to my favorite app, and voila! Heaven on toasty bread. (Seriously de-lish.) If you want a snack that’s a total crowd-pleaser, take this to your next get together.

So now an explanation as to why I keep playing with things like my food to make letters and what all this “356 Days of Blue Lollipop Road” is:

3 years ago, I went to a breakfast talk that featured a guy named Noah Scalin. He talked about how he created a project (Skull-A-Day) sort of by accident. He’s an artist/designer and was walking through the park one day, found a skull, took it home, snapped a photo and posted it online, then the next day added something funky to the skull, posted a photo again, and then continued to “make a skull” a day for 365 days, documenting and sharing the project daily. That project turned into millions of followers, and this awesome book and encouraging concept on a way to stay creative and “unstuck.” People from all over the world have been inspired to spend a year “making” something too and sharing it with others. Noah has featured a bunch of them on his Make Something 365 site.

Since meeting Noah at that talk, I’ve thought a lot about doing my own 365 project. I loved hearing about how during Noah’s Skull-A-Day year, he spent more time than usual with family and friends coming up with different skulls to make. He made skulls out of bread with a baker friend, out of an old TV another friend donated to him, he snapped shots of gum melted on the streets of NYC that made out the shape of a skull, and so on. He talked about how committing to create something original on a daily basis made him stop, take in his surrounding more, and be more aware. It made him “unplug” and get old school crafty. It made him excited to dream up ways to take otherwise useless/used items and give them another life. It helped him connect with people around him. I love that, because adults seem to forget to take a minute each day and “get lost” in a book, a moment, a time, a place, a person we are with. When we were young, everyday is an encouragement-fest to be anything you want to be! Paint, draw! Go, run, play! Make new friends, find an adventure, use your imagination. Noah’s thought for creating a thing consistently everyday reminds us how important it is to stay unstuck and out of the drone zone that’s easy to fall into.

So! In an effort for me to stay unstuck and creative as I have a home base now (because you know I’d rather be on the road, but I’m still trying to figure out how to make that work), and to feel like I am still “traveling” in my everyday, and also to keep encouraging all of you out there to stay curious, explore beyond everyday surroundings, and be fearless in pursuit of goals- I have started my own 365 project. I am “making” a BLR a day for this entire year of 2014. Whoop!

Here’s the fun part. I want YOU to get involved and hop in the party boat too! I want YOU to make  your own BLR and send it to me so I can share here. (Email submissions to Diane(@)bluelollipoproad.com)

Rules:

THERE ARE NO RULES! Write BLR on your face, bake, slice, glue, draw a B, L,, and R, paint it on a shirt and take a photo of yourself wearing it and doing something fun, use some sidewalk chalk, sharpies, pencils, pens, cardboard boxes…whatever!

Blue Lollipop Road to me is a place where I feel free. A time I feel inspired, and remember what really matters. It’s enjoying a simple and seemingly insignificant moment as totally awesome. It’s when I’m with someone I love who makes me laugh and feel special. The road of life is a different color to each of us. It’s all about spending time doing things that are important to you and being with people you love. So my question is; What does your road look like? I’d love to know how and where you spend your time. When do you take a minute to indulge in letting yourself feel passionate about your “thing.” How do you have fun, stay creative, and keep yourself unstuck?

Let’s get crafty and stay out of the drone zone together! Today is the day. What are you waiting for?

My road is a blue lollipop road. What’s yours?

the world’s best auto shop

Wallace Automotive in Richmond, VA is the shop where I’ve had all of my Honda’s serviced for years now. Every last person in both their locations has treated me like gold since day 1. They are by far the best in the business. I’m no longer living in VA, but I make sure to schedule time to have work done anytime I pass through town, and I always get continued love:

Wallace auto love for the BLR-Mobile

I always like to give props to any company that has consistent service like these guys. Thanks for keeping me safe and sound during all these years and my gazillion miles on the road, Wallace!

What company treats you like gold?

on this day last year…

…I took these photos:

Fall trees in Middleburg, VA

Fall trees in Middleburg, VA

I run a lot in the morning and have for years. Last fall, I ran and drove but this gorgeous scene daily. Love this set of trees.

This morning like many, as I beat feet in a different place observing my surroundings with my mind swirling in a million directions as usual, I thought of where I was one year ago today and what’s happened since. Lot’s of growth and change. A few things that will always remain the same; A huge appreciation for nature, being thankful I have healthy legs to still run regularly, and a curiosity, anticipation, and excitement for whatever is next to come.

A very odd, unexpected, monumental life paradigm shift has happened to me during this past year- especially in the last few months. I am a control freak who feels out of control, I am a normally comfortable in my own skin girl who’s feeling wildly uncomfortable, and it generally feels like an alien has invaded my body. (So much for trying to be the never faltering, I’ve got this- I don’t need anyone, total badass I try to play on TV!) I’m being forcefully reminded once again:

1.) No one can control everything.

2.) Good and necessary growth is impossible unless you feel wildly uncomfortable at times.

3.) We can’t fight nature, so we may as well embrace it.

As I reflect on a year that seems worlds away from any other I’ve had, I’m trying to keep the parts of myself I know should stay forever, and I’m doing my best to leave behind the ones I probably should’ve let the death-grip go on, long ago.

Here’s to staying true to your old self while growing into your new.

Where were you one year ago today?

one of the many reasons why i love it

Early morning road time after one of the many nights sleeping in my car a few weeks ago. These were taken at random as I drove (safely of course) at around 5:45am, somewhere around the VA/NC border even before a coffee stop:

Sunrise on the Blue Lollipop Road

It’s amazing what a put your iPhone in the air and click, click, click will capture. Nothing like a warm morning on the road alone in quiet watching the sunrise.

Here’s to carpe diem.

What are you waiting for?
